Welcome friend,
Hi, I’m so glad you’re here! MaeAnn Counseling is a virtual therapy practice located in Kentucky and created to help people reconnect with themselves, find peace, and live more authentically.
The name MaeAnn comes from two of the most important women in my life, my grandmothers, Virginia Mae and Joyce Annette. They taught me what it means to be genuine, kind, and true to who you are. Their love and lessons are at the heart of everything I do, and MaeAnn Counseling is my way of carrying that forward; helping others embrace who they are and empowering them to live more authentically.
Many of the people we work with struggle with people-pleasing, self-doubt, or codependency, and struggle with self-worth. They’ve spent so much time trying to make others happy or seeking approval that they’ve lost touch with their own needs and worth. Sometimes they even wonder if they’re “enough” or if they’re a good person.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and you don’t have to stay stuck in those patterns. Together, we’ll explore what’s underneath the anxiety, guilt, or heaviness you’ve been carrying. We’ll work on healing the roots of those struggles so you can start caring for yourself, setting boundaries, and believe that you are enough, just as you are.
MaeAnn Counseling is a space for growth, healing, and self-compassion. You deserve to live your best life.

Meet the Therapist

Janel Adams, LCSW
Hi, I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 14 years of experience helping individuals heal from trauma, navigate anxiety and depression, work through relationship challenges, and find their way through life's difficult seasons. I have a special passion for working with people who struggle with low self-worth, people-pleasing, codependency, perfectionism, and feeling like they've lost themselves while trying to take care of everyone else.
I believe therapy should be one of the few places where you don't have to pretend you're okay. My goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can show up exactly as you are. You are the expert on your own life; my role is to walk alongside you, offering guidance, support, and encouragement as you navigate your healing journey.
My work is grounded in a trauma-informed approach. I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I also incorporate narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and somatic techniques because healing isn't one-size-fits-all. We'll find an approach that feels right for you.
Taking the first step into therapy can feel overwhelming, and that's okay. Healing isn't always easy, but you don't have to do it alone.

Do you provide in-person services?
Currently MaeAnn Counseling offers virtual appointments only.
Can I physically be located anywhere during my virtual appointment?
You must be physically in the state of Kentucky during your virtual appointment due to licensing restrictions.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we currently accept Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carelon BH, Cigna, and Quest BH.
What happens in our therapy sessions?
Each therapy session looks different, but in each session we'll talk about what is going on in your life and explore how you're feeling. We'll work together to understand what's contributing to your challenges. I want to create a safe, supportive space where you can let down your guards and exist without judgment. We will set goals, build on your strengths, and develop tools to help you feel better. Sessions may include talking, reflection, or learning new coping skills, whatever best fits your needs.
What happens in a consultation?
A consultation is a brief (10-15 minutes), no-pressure conversation to see if we're a good fit to work together. We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what you're hoping to get out of it, and I'll answer any questions you have about the process. It's also a chance for you to get a feel for my style and make sure you feel comfortable. If it seems like a good match, we'll schedule your first full session.
Is therapy right for me?
Therapy can be helpful for anyone who wants support, healing, or personal growth. You don't need to be in a crisis to benefit, many people come to therapy to better understand themselves, improve relationships, or find healthier ways to cope with life. If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready for change, therapy can offer a safe space to explore what you need and move toward a more balanced, fulfilling life.
What are your qualifications?
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Morehead State University in 2011, and my Master's of Social Work from the University of Louisville in 2020. I have over 14 years over experiencing working with adults survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual violence, and 3 years of experience working with children who have experienced sexual violence. I use techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and somatic therapy. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma-Focused CBT. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Kentucky, license number 260177.
